Museums in Cusco

The city of Cusco is the capital of the region of the same name and, in addition, as stated in the Peruvian constitution, it is the “Historic Capital” of the country, declared “World Heritage” in 1983 by UNESCO, is usually referred to as , due to the large number of monuments it has, the “Rome of America”

Inka Museum of the National University of San Antonio Abad

Address: Cuesta del Almirante Nº 103.

It is known as the Archaeological Museum of Cusco or simply Inka Museum; It has several remains, objects and artifacts of the Inca Civilization, dating from the time of the Spanish conquest. It has many archaeological treasures among which are ceramics, textiles, jewelry, skulls and a collection of Inca vessels.

Merced Convent Museum

Address: Mantas Street Nº 121.

This is a beautiful convent that was rebuilt in 1680 after an earthquake, has beautiful murals with depictions of the life of San Pedro Nolasco, founder of the Mercedaria order, also houses a small museum of religious art, which guards an incredible golden solid Covered with precious stones.

Archbishop’s Palace Museum

Address: On the corner of Hatun Rumiyoq Street and Herrajes Street.

It is a museum of religious art in an old house, which was owned by the archbishop of Cusco, is located in a pedestrian alley with Inca stonework. This museum exhibits a collection of paintings from the colonial era, however its real attraction is the house that houses the museum, due to its impressive Moorish architecture and its small chapel.

Qoricancha Site Museum

Address: Av. El Sol s / n Basement esplanade of the Qoricancha.

It is the most important temple in times of the Inca civilization, known as the Temple of the Sun, Qoricancha in Quechua means patio of gold and this is because before the invasion of the Spaniards, in the whole temple you could find gold statues life-size, a huge gold solar disk, gold altars, and solid gold panels that covered the walls; the Incas worshiped the Sun, and when it illuminated the Qoricancha the reflection represented the golden glory.

Museum of Contemporary Art, Municipality of Cusco

Address: Municipal Palace – Plazoleta Regocijo.

It is a museum of modern art, located in the Plaza Regocijo, contains paintings and sculptures of modern art, as well as canvases and contemporary crafts, on the second floor you can enjoy works by painters from Cusco since the twentieth century.

Museum of Pre-Columbian Art

Address: Plaza de las Nazarenas Nº 231.

This museum is located in a colonial house known as Casa Cabrera, remodeled to house the first and only Peruvian museum dedicated to the art of ancient cultures in Peru. In this historical monument are preserved from segments of Inca walls, to balconies of the Republican era, the museum is divided into 10 thematic rooms where utensils, jewels in gold, bone and shells dating from the formative era of Nazca cultures are exhibited , Mochica, Huari, Chimú, Chancay and Inca. 450 works of art ranging from 1250 to 1532, selected from the 45,000 objects belonging to the Larco Museum in Lima.
